The Importance of Sleep on Wellbeing

Sleepless or disrupted nights can leave you feeling tired and irritable the next day, but did you know they can also have a negative effect on your health and wellbeing?

Whilst you’re peacefully slumbering, your body is still working hard performing important processes to help your brain to process the events of the day and your body to repair and restore itself.

Without enough good quality sleep, we lose the ability to perform at our best during the day and are at risk of becoming rundown and unwell.

What happens within our bodies whilst we sleep?

Just a few essential processes that take place whilst we sleep include:

Brain – Our brains sort through and process all the information from the day. Some bits of information will be stored as long-term memories and others will be discarded.

Hormones – Our bodies regulate the production and release of many hormones responsible for essential processes in our bodies, including the stress hormone cortisol which is lowered.

Cells – Damaged cells throughout our bodies are repaired and restored, including those in our brain, muscles and skin.

Immune system – Cytokines are produced, these are a type of protein that our immune system uses to fight inflammation and infection.

Getting a good night’s sleep

Most adults require an average of between 6 to 8 hours of sleep a night for healthy mental and physical functioning.

To set yourself up for a good night’s sleep it’s important to wind down and relax in the evening and ensure that you’re comfortable in bed.

Top tips for a better night’s sleep:

  • Stop looking at screens 1 – 2 hours before going to bed.
  • Get some fresh air and exercise during the day.
  • Avoid caffeine after 3pm.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Minimise noise and light in the bedroom.
  • Take a bath, read a book, or try meditating.
  • Wear comfortable clothing in bed.

At Esteem- No Pause, we stock a range of specialist clothing that can comfortably be worn at night to reduce the discomfort caused by night sweats and help you to get a good night’s sleep.

Our clothing is made from specialist fabrics with breathable properties to help draw excess perspiration away from your skin to keep you feeling dry and comfortable all night long.
