Are night sweats keeping you up at night? Well, you’re not alone. Did you know that night sweats impact 75% of menopausal women, making it one of the most common symptoms? Our panel of real women talk about how it feels to suffer from night sweats and hot flushes – everything from fashion choices to avoiding social situations – which you can watch on our Facebook page. But here we explore the topic of night sweats a little deeper.
What are night sweats?
Otherwise known as nocturnal hyperhidrosis, night sweats are a condition that causes excessive sweating when someone is asleep – it may mean that person perspires more during the day, but not necessarily. Everyone can sweat in the night if their environment is too hot, but night sweats mean you wake up with damp or wet clothing and bed sheets, even though you’re sleeping in a cool area.
Why does the menopause cause night sweats?
Largely it is due to the fluctuating estrogenic levels that women suffer when going through the menopause. These changing levels impact a region of the brain that regulates body temperature and simply put, causes confusion, and the brain senses an increase in body temperature. This causes it to trigger sweat glands, which you will feel as sudden and intense perspiration.
Is menopause the only cause of night sweats?
In short, no, but it is one of the most common causes. If you are female and between the ages of 35 and 50 and you’re suffering from night sweats then it is most likely the menopause. Other causes could be anxiety, alcohol and substance use, or hyperhidrosis – however, if you’re not sure then it is worth speaking to your GP.
