Hypnotherapy and Menopause

Hypnotherapy and Menopause

When thinking about treatments to address menopausal symptoms, hypnotherapy isn’t at the top of the list.  However, Esteem – No Pause is very open to seeking alternative treatments given that we produce our own in the form of technical high performance clothing that address the discomfort of hot flushes and night sweats.  The mainstream treatment for menopausal symptoms is HRT prescribed by your GP, though this is not suitable for all, and some women are concerned about menopausal symptoms reappearing once they stop taking HRT.

Our founder Jane is very friendly with a hypnotherapist called Jane Fox who is based in Heaton Moor, Stockport.  So, when Jane informed us that she was now using hypnotherapy as a means to relieve menopausal symptoms we were clearly intrigued and interested to learn more.

Women can experience both physiological and psychological side effects during menopause.  There are 34 symptoms of the menopause!

The key to how hypnotherapy can help with menopausal symptoms lies in the relationship between the area of the brain called the hypothalamus, which regulates body temperature and lies in the primitive mind, and how effective hypnosis is in reducing negativity and increasing positivity in the primitive mind.  This is an over simplified explanation of the science involved but one that us non-scientists can readily access.  Any readers of Prof Steve Peters book “The Chimp Paradox” will be familiar with this concept.  In sum, negative thoughts lie in our primitive brain and hypnosis helps change these negative thoughts to positive ones thereby improving our wellbeing and general outlook to life.  During night sweats and hot flushes our body temperature rises and as the hypothalamus regulates body temperature hypnosis is an ideal form of treatment to explore to help reduce these particular symptoms.

Never having tried hypnotherapy before I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.  I sat down in a very comfortable chair whilst Jane talked me through what was reminiscent of a guided meditation.  Afterwards I was very relaxed and refreshed and slept well that night.  At the time I was experiencing menopause related insomnia on a frequent basis, so having a good night’s sleep without tapping into my Sudoku app at 3am was more than welcome!

A course of approximately 6 sessions is advised to start making an impact, as a change in outlook and perspective is required which is not going to happen after one session.

If you are looking for, and open to, alternative methods in addressing your menopausal symptoms I would recommend giving hypnotherapy a go whilst exploring what, and the combination of approaches, work best for you.  As with everything in life, one size does not fit all, and we need to know what is available to us in order to make informed choices.

Love, Jane x
