Don’t let symptoms of the menopause stop you from enjoying your holiday. Pack these essentials to keep you feeling comfortable whilst you’re away.
If you suffer with hot flushes, travelling somewhere with a hot and humid climate can be a daunting prospect.
By packing a few basic items, you can minimise discomfort caused by symptoms of the menopause, allowing you to relax and enjoy your holiday.
Did you know that during the menopause your skin is more susceptible to suffering UV damage? This is because your oestrogen levels are lower, and less oestrogen means less of the protective pigment melanin. Women going through the menopause should select a higher factor sun cream and be extra vigilant with applying it whilst on holiday to protect their skin from damage and painful sunburn.
With hot flushes often choosing the most inconvenient times to strike, carrying a small handheld fan in your bag can offer a little relief if you start to burn up whilst on the beach, a crowded bus, or mid-meal. If you’re vacationing in a hot and humid climate, the discomfort caused by a hot flush can intensify, so seemingly small comforts can make a big difference. If you can, freeze bottles of water to take out in your bag during the day too to help you cool off.
Specialist breathable clothing
Packing suitable clothing is the best thing you can do to improve your comfort whilst away on holiday. The specialist clothing that we stock here at Esteem – No Pause is made from fabric with a unique honeycomb structure to allow excellent circulation of air, keeping you cool and effectively managing excess perspiration.
Our clothes are ideal for taking on holiday as they are thin and lightweight, taking up minimal space in your suitcase. They are also designed to be worn flexibly, either during the day or at night, to effectively manage excess perspiration. There’s no need to pack a week’s worth of our garments either, they dry very quickly and can simply be washed in the shower at the end of the day.
Our clothing is hugely beneficial in regulating your body temperature between the extremes of heat often experienced whilst on holiday, especially when going from outside heat to fierce air conditioning inside. You can view our full range here.
After a hot flush, it’s common to feel wet and clammy from excess perspiration, which will only add to your discomfort in an already hot and humid environment. Feeling hot and sweaty can distract from having a good time. Keep a pack of wet wipes in your bag so that you can quickly and easily freshen up when you need to, no matter where you are or what you’re doing.
Periods become unpredictable during the menopause and trying to find somewhere to buy sanitary protection in a foreign country can be frustrating and take precious time out of your holiday, so be sure to pack sanitary protection just in case.
Sleep mask and ear plugs
Trying to get to sleep somewhere unfamiliar can be difficult at the best of times, but if you’re going through the menopause it can be particularly hard. One of the commonest symptoms of the menopause is insomnia, so it’s a good idea to pack whatever you can to try to aid a sound night’s sleep. It’s difficult to get the most out of your holiday if you’re feeling sleep deprived, so pack a sleep mask, ear plugs and comfortable nightwear to give yourself the best chance of a feeling rested whilst away.
